Materials

The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle

30 or more colorful chenille stems

markers

pencils

green felt

scissors (adult use only)

1 or more plastic bug catchers

Instructions

1. Have the children sit in a circle and choose one
child (the spider) to sit in the center wearing a
blindfold (or with closed eyes).
2. Have another child (the fly) slowly and
quietly approach the child in the center
of the circle.
3. Have the approaching child (the fly)
makes a buzzing sound. The child in
the center of the circle (the spider)
should try to identify the direction
of the sound by pointing in the
direction of the sound.
4. After several approaches, have the
"spider" child return to the circle.
5. Choose another child to sit in the spider's web.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Using the blindfold heightens the children's interest in most any activity. For
those children who prefer not to wear the blindfold, this activity may be done
with closed eyes.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Are the children sitting in the circle engaged during the activity? Do they
enjoy hushing one another as "the fly" approaches?
Do the children interact well together?
