Instructions
1. Cut sheets of construction paper into 2" (5 cm) wide strips that are long
enough to encircle a child's waist. If necessary, join two strips together with
tape.
2. Punch a single hole into each end of the strip.
3. Tie one 6" (15 cm) length of yarn through each hole.
4. Explain to the children that they are going to make a book belt, which are
used to tell a story.
5. Ask each child to pick out a favorite story. On the left side of the belt, the
child draws a picture of something that happened in the beginning of the
story. In the middle of the belt, the child draws something that happened in
the middle of the story. On the right side of the belt, the child draws a picture
of something that happened at the end of the story.
6. On the inside of the belt, write the child's name and the title of the book.
7. To wear, put the belt around the child's waist and gently tie the two lengths of
yarn into a bow. For the best fit, pre-fit the strips before the children decorate
them.
8. It's fun for everyone to wear a book belt during a special book event or
special book snack! Be sure to make a book belt for yourself!
