Instructions

l Put a handful of cereal into bags or cups. Make one for each child.
l Draw color patterns on the poster board. Possible patterns include red,
yellow, red, yellow; blue, green, orange, blue, green, orange; or green, yellow,
blue, blue, green, yellow, blue, blue.
What to Do
1. Talk about patterns. Show the children the patterns on the poster board and
ask them which color follows each sequence.
2. Give each child a bag or cup of cereal. Tell them not to eat it yet!
3. Explain to the children that they are going to copy the color patterns using
their cereal. Have them sort each pile of cereal by color. For young children,
use simple patterns, such as red, blue, red, blue.
4. Ask older children to copy the patterns on the poster board by arranging the
cereal loops in the same patterns onto chenille stems. Demonstrate by making
one yourself.
5. After the children create their patterns, invite them to eat their patterns!

l For older children, have them create their own patterns.
l Also consider letting them string the cereal on yarn to make necklaces or
bracelets.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Walk around to observe the cereal patterns. If the children created their own
patterns, ask them to share their favorite patterns with all the children.
