Instructions
l Create two sets of cards. Cut out colored handprints for one set. Use tagboard
to print the names of the colors on the other set.
What to Do
1. Set out the color nametags and colored handprints.
2. Have the children match the color names to the colored handprints.
3. As the children are matching the color names and handprints, engage them in a
discussion about the colors names, and the order of colors on the color wheel.
4. Talk with the children about the qualities of the various colors (warm colors and
cool colors, primary and secondary colors).
5. Challenge the children to put the matching handprints and color name cards
together in a pocket chart in the order that matches the color wheel.

l Use a pocket chart, if available.
l For a shortcut, use bulletin board trim with handprints to make handprint
cards.
l For younger children, print the color names in the corresponding color.
l Laminate the cards for durability.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Discuss with the children how they matched the color names to the handprints.
Reread the color names with the children. Encourage the children's use of
small motor skills by asking them to place cards in the pocket chart.
