Materials

colorful picnic items such as colored plastic plates, cups, bowls, napkins, silverware, empty

juice boxes and food containers, and artificial fruit

picnic basket

blanket

Instructions

1. Ask the children to form a circle. Hand
each a set of colored papers. Begin with
two or three colors
2. Sing "The Hokey Pokey," substituting
the phrase "Put your red card in..." for
the body parts. Go slowly so the
children have time to shuffle their
papers as needed.
3. Let the children take turns choosing the
selected colors.
4. End with either "Put all the colors in...."
5. When the children become more
skilled, increase the number of colors
you give to each child.
6. For extra fun, include a rainbow-colored
piece of paper and end with "Put the rainbow in...."

l If your children struggle with certain colors, emphasize those in the game.
Children can play this game with any kind of item from shapes to letters.

To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Review the names of the colors they are holding. Can the children follow
directions while you sing them?
