Materials
red, yellow, blue, and green paper (one of each for each child)
Instructions
l In advance, cut up the raw vegetables and fruits the children will eat.
l Keep one of each vegetable uncut so the children will know what it looks like
in its natural state.
l Keep the food items in separate containers.
What to Do
1. Distribute six plates (one of each color) to every child.
2. Introduce the children to each fruit and vegetable, and its matching color card.
Ask the children to say the name of the fruit or vegetable and the color of each.
3. Hold up each fruit and vegetable without the color card, and ask the children to
identify the name and color of each fruit and vegetable.
4. Post the color cards on the board with tape.
5. If appropriate, challenge the children to use black washable markers to write the
color names.
6. While the children work, fill the plastic bags with one piece of each fruit and
vegetable, and distribute a bag to each child.
7. Ask the children to sort the fruits and vegetables according to color, and place
them on the corresponding plates.
8. Invite the children to eat their samples.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Review the colors of each plate by asking the children to read them aloud.
l Discuss with the children how they matched the color of each fruit and
vegetable with the same colored plate.
