Materials
masking tape
construction paper (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
scissors (adult only)
stapler (adult only)
color die
crayons (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple)
Instructions
l Cut a set of color cards and white cards in the same dimensions.
l Write the name of a color on each of the white cards and laminate (write the
word yellow with a yellow marker, green in green, and so on, or use a black
marker to reduce the visual scaffolding).
What to Do
1. Pick up a color card and tell the children the color name.
2. Show the matching word card and have the children identify it. You can start
simply by using only a few cards.
3. Encourage the children to play matching games on the floor, table, or white
board. For example, line the color cards up on the white board and hand a
child a word card. Help him read it, if necessary. Then ask him to place the
word card under the corresponding color card.
4. For a language game, give each child a color card or a word card. Encourage
children to seek out the child who has their color or word card match.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip S
l For an extra challenge, children can discuss the spelling of words like silver,
purple, light blue, brown, and white.
l Also consider placing the word cards or color cards on the white board and
having the children write the color names under the cards with a white board
marker.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Children are very interested in matching and writing tasks of all kinds, so these
stimulating materials will address multiple developmental needs. Discuss the
matching the children did and ask them how they found the matching items.
