Instructions

l Place two lengths of masking tape about 20' long and 5' apart down the
center of the gymnasium or another open area.
What to Do
1. Provide the children with colored T-shirts to put on over their clothes.
2. Have the children sit in two lines on the masking tape, facing each other.
3. Suggest that the children roll a beach ball back and forth across to one another.
As each child receives the ball, invite her to name the color of her own T-shirt.
4. Invite the children to find their own place to move around in the gym, as you
begin the music.
5. Ask the children to dance and move to the music, showing off their colors.
6. After several minutes, toss the beach ball up into the air and turn off the music,
signaling children to stop moving.
7. Encourage the children to exchange T-shirts with a classmate and then return to
the two masking tape lines.
8. Repeat the beach ball rolling activity and begin the music again.
9. Continue until the children have been able to "dance" in several different colors.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Purchase bright-colored T-shirts at rummage sales or resale shops. After washing
them, keep them at school for a variety of color activities.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Listen as the children identify the colors of the T-shirts they are wearing. After
the activity, invite children to stand on the lines and bat the beach ball back
and forth as children name the colors of their pants, their own shirt, their socks,
and so on.
