eight empty coffee cans, one for each color

white construction paper

marker

die cuts in various colors

various objects of different colors

basket

Instructions

1. Demonstrate how to sort the buttons.
2. One at a time, touch each button and say
its color.
3. Touch two buttons of matching colors
and place one button in a cup while
repeating the color name.
4. Ask one child to find other buttons that
are the same color.
5. Choose another color and work with the
first child or another child until all the buttons are sorted.
6. Encourage the children to sort the buttons independently.

l Begin with primary colors. Then challenge the children by replacing colors
with other colors such as pink and brown.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children describe how they sorted the buttons?
l In manipulating the buttons, are the children exhibiting age-appropriate small
motor development?
