Materials

  • coffee filters
  • watercolor markers
  • rainy day or spray bottle of water
  • permanent marker

What to do

1. Place filters and markers on a table and encourage children to color on the filters.

2. Write each child's name on his filter using a permanent marker.

3. Place decorated coffee filters out in the rain for a few minutes (misty rain works best) to allow colors to run. To do the activity inside, use a spray bottle of water.

4. If possible, let children watch their filters from a window and decide when they'd like to bring them back in. If they are kept out too long, the color washes away.

5. Hang them in windows, give them as gifts, or display them on a light table, if available.

Instructions

1. Have a discussion about how banks keep money safe. If possible, visit a local
bank with the children and ask to see the outside of the safe.
2. Provide materials from the list above and
encourage the children to create their
own safes to hold their money.
3. Talk about combinations
and let each child
designate one for
his safe.
4. Write the
combination down
somewhere, such
as on the
bottom of the
box, so that it is not
forgotten.
