Materials

dictionary

large paper, chalkboard, or dry-erase board

two large sheets of paper

marker

Instructions

* January 1st is New Year's Day.
1. Bring a dictionary to circle time. (If this is the first time the group will be
using a dictionary, introduce it to them and explain its purpose.)
2. Write the word "resolution" on a large sheet of paper, chalkboard, or dryerase
board.
3. Look up the word in the dictionary. Explain how you are locating the
word and ask the children to help you sound it out.
4. Write the definition on the paper next to the word.
5. Explain that you would like the group to decide on a good resolution
for the class to work on together. Explain that working on a resolution
as a group will be beneficial because they can help each other to
keep it.
6. Discuss any problems the group may be having (sharing, following a
rule, and so on) or something they would like to do more of or get
better at (read more books each day, keep the room clean, and so on).
7. Choose one of the resolutions for the group and write it on a large
sheet of paper. Post it on a wall. (If there are many suggestions from the
group, have a vote to choose the resolution that will be worked on.)
8. The next day at circle time, discuss the resolution.
9. Make a list of things that can be done to ensure the resolution will be
kept.
10. Decide as a group how you will monitor the class' success.
11. Revisit your progress often with the group.
