Instructions

* Flag Day is June 14th.
1. Show the children an American flag. Ask if they know what it is and what
it is for.
2. Introduce the vocabulary word "symbol." Explain that the American flag
is a symbol for the United States of America.
3. Continue a discussion about flags. Show pictures of different flags and
maps showing the countries, states, and so on that the flags symbolize.
4. Provide art supplies and encourage the children to create a flag for their
home or the classroom.
5. Display the flags proudly in the classroom.
More to do Have the group vote on a flag to be a symbol for their classroom. Hang the
chosen flag in a place of honor, such as at the entrance to the room or next
to the American flag. Chart the votes so the children have a visual count of
their votes. Help the children tally the votes by counting together. Write
each total down so they can see written numbers, and use words such as
"more" and "less" when discussing the results.
