Instructions

l Collect a large assortment of doll clothes, in basic colors for younger children
and shades of colors for older ones. Family members are often more than
willing to sew or knit for this project. Select clothing with an assortment of
button, zip, snap, hook and eye, and Velcro fastenings.
What to Do
1. Hopefully you will end up with a large box of clothes, which you can ask a
child to sort into colors or use to dress dolls in the "color of the day."
2. Encourage the children to follow instructions and dress the dolls in various
ways by saying, "Please dress one in orange and brown clothes," or "Please
dress this one in something red, something yellow, something blue, and
something green."
3. Invite the children to play with the different clothes to practice using
different fastenings.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Many boys have been encouraged from an early age not to play with dolls.
Giving the rag dolls names and referring to them as "class mascots" or a
similar word will help overcome this problem.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Encourage the children to pick the correct color when asked to find the blue
clothes. Does each child still need a pictorial clue to help him?
l Can the children identify the clothes' fastenings by name?
l Are the children exhibiting age-appropriate small motor skills when using the
different fastenings, such as zippers and snaps?
