Instructions
1. Read the children a simple book about cities. Talk with the children about
some characteristics of cities. If the children live in a city, ask them to describe
it. If they do not live in a city, ask the children to describe a city they have
visited or know about.
2. Show the children the materials. Tell the children they will be making a small
book about their city or town. (Note: If the children do not live in a city or
town, make the books about a nearby town or city.)
3. To make a City Book, help each child do the following:
a. Fold each piece of construction paper in half. Staple together. Each piece
of paper will yield four pages.
b. Glue a picture of the local city map on one page.
c. Draw or cut out pictures that symbolize life in their city.
d. Add stickers, drawings, or cut-out pictures of birds, flowers, city flag, and
so on.
e. Have the children draw the cover with their name on it, such as "Joan's
City."
4. Help the children with each part of the process if necessary. Observe the
children as they work, and engage them in discussions about their books.
5. After the children finish making their books, they can take them home or put
them in the class library.
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
1. Can the children name some facts about their city?
2. Were the children able to decorate their city books without difficulty?
