Materials

3 tablespoons margarine

1 bag of miniature marshmallows

4 1/2 cups of "O"-shaped cereal (such as Cheerios (c) )

microwave-safe bowl

13" x 9" pan

Instructions

1. Let the children help measure by counting the tablespoons of margarine and
cups of marshmallows (use the whole bag but let children add them using
measuring cups to practice counting) into a microwave-safe bowl and
microwave on high until puffed up (1 to 2 minutes).
2. Show them the cereal and discuss how the pieces are shaped like circles.
3. Show the children a clean 1-cup measuring cup. Explain that they will need 4
1/2 cups of cereal for the recipe, which means they will need to fill the cup
four times. Show them what half means. Add 1/2 cup of cereal to the bowl.
4. Spoon the mixture into a greased 13" x 9" pan. Press down gently. The
mixture will still be hot from the microwave. Cool slightly before cutting.
5. Cut the circle-shaped treats into squares and serve "circle squares" as a
yummy snack! (You can also cut the squares into halves to explain the
concept of "half " again.)
More to do Art: Encourage the children to cut out objects that are circles and squares from
old magazines and make a circle-square mural.
