Materials

solid-color objects (toys, strings of beads, and so on)

Instructions

l Remove labels from bottles and write "I spy..." on each bottle using a
permanent marker.
What to Do
1. Explain to the children that are going to create a treasure bottle that contains
three hidden colors. Ask each child to pick a handful of treasures in three
different colors (such as green, purple, and red).
2. Write the name of the three colors on each child's bottle using a permanent
marker. Older children can write the words themselves, with your help. (For
example, "I spy green, purple, and red.")
3. Have the children use funnels to put the assorted treasures in their bottles and
then pour pebbles or a similar material on top of their treasures until the
bottles are half full. Close lids tightly.
4. The children shake their bottles. See if they can identify one or more objects of
each color in their bottles.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Discuss with the children how they sort by color. Observe their attention span
and peer interaction. Are the children involved in the activity?
l Are the children exhibiting an age-appropriate level of small motor
development?
