scissors (adult use only)

plastic bottles

seeds for fastgrowing plants, such as grass or sprouts

soil

plant growth charts for each child and adult

rulers

growth chart used for children

Instructions

1. Engage the children in a discussion
about the different creatures that
live in the ocean. Explain that it is
important to keep the ocean clean
so that these creatures can survive and
thrive.
2. Ask the children about whales. Can they describe
whales? Do they know that there are a variety of
different kinds of whales? Ask the children what
they can do to help keep the ocean clean for the
whales.
3. Display various pictures of whales. Show the children
the cards with the names of the various whales written
on them.
4. Go through the names of the whales with the children. Then, help the
children learn the names of each whale and then teach someone else about
the different types of whales in the ocean.
5. Encourage the children to discuss together ways that they can help keep the
ocean clean so that whales can thrive.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children name various whales?
* Do the children understand that it is important to care for the ocean so that
whales can live safely?
