Instructions

1. Ahead of time, measure 12" across and 12" down on chart paper to make a 12" x 12" square. Make a grid with 1" squares so that there are 12 squares in each row and 12 squares in each column.

2. Number the grid 1 through 12 in the first column. Place the grid on the rug so the children can see it easily.

3. Choose a child to measure one of the classroom objects from the collection, such as a crayon.

4. Demonstrate how to put one end of a ruler at the end of the crayon to measure it correctly, making sure both edges are on an equal line.

5. Ask the child to look at where the end of the crayon is on the ruler. Help the child identify the length of the crayon in inches.

6. Show how to place the crayon on the grid next to the correct number of inches. For example, a 3" crayon would be placed next to the numeral 3.

7. Continue measuring all the objects and placing them on the grid. Discuss with the children which measurement had more, fewer, and equal numbers of objects.More to do Language and Literacy: Give each child a ruler to measure objects. Ask them to trace the outline of each object onto a piece of paper, help them label it in inches, and use the pictures to create a class booklet.
