Materials

  • rain gauge, or a plastic container with straight sides and a ruler
  • calendar

What to do

1. When it rains, collect rainwater in the rain gauge. If you do not have a rain gauge, use a plastic container with straight sides.

2. After the rain, read the rain gauge with the children, or use a ruler to measure the amount of water in the container.

3. Empty the water and leave the container out for another rainy day.

4. Record the amounts of rain on the calendar every time it rains. Discuss the results with the children.

More to do

  • Cut strips of ribbon to represent the quantity of rainfall during a week or month.
  • Discuss the total rainfall by lining the ribbons up end to end and measuring the total length of the ribbons.
