1. Divide a large piece of paper three sections. Draw a goldfish at the top of the
first section, a teddy bear at the top of the second section, and a face with a
frown on it in the third section along with the words: "I don't like these
crackers."
2. Have the children wash their hands and get ready for a snack.
3. Provide goldfish crackers and teddy bear graham crackers. Let the children
taste one of each.
4. Ask each child which cracker he likes best. Help the child write his name in
the section under the item he named. Give the children some of their favorite
item to eat.
5. If a child says he doesn't like either cracker, help him write his name in the last
section. Provide an alternate snack.
6. After the children finish their snack, count how many names are in each
section and write the number at the bottom of each column.
7. Talk about which column has more and which has the least.
More to do Chart everything, including snack preferences; Velcro vs. laces; bus riders, walkers,
and car riders; favorite colors; long hair, short hair, or medium hair; and so on. Let
the children suggest categories to chart.
General Tips: Make reusable charts by drawing columns on paper and
laminating. Use wipe-off markers to do the charting. You could also use a small
wipe-off board, chalkboard, or magnet board. If using a magnet board, put the
children's names on magnetic tape.
