Instructions

This is a fun math activity to do when studying caterpillars or insects.
1. Prepare beforehand by cutting a variety of symmetrical leaf shapes from green
paper. Make each leaf a different length. Fold each leaf in half down the center,
unfold the leaves, and place them in a stack.
2. Cut thick yarn into 2" segments
to make "caterpillars" and
put them in the bug
catcher.
3. Open the bug
catcher and pour
out the
caterpillars. Pick
up a leaf shape and
lay it flat.
4. Ask the
children to
guess how
many caterpillars
will fit on the center line of
the leaf.
5. Have them put caterpillars on the
fold and count them as you go.
6. Repeat the activity with several other leaves, estimating how many will fit
along the fold and then counting to find out.
7. Continue until all the leaves have a line of caterpillars in the center.
More to do Help the children trace around their hand or arm on paper. Invite them to see
how many "caterpillars" will fit down the length of their hand or arm.
