Sentence strips, cut into phrases of the poem, for example, "Sleepy Cats" on one and "Creepy
Cats" on another
Large open area, inside or outside
Instructions
1. Read the following poem aloud to the children.CatsSleepy catsCreepy catsPurry catsFurry catsMousy catsHousey catsRuggy catsHuggy cats2. Reread the poem and have the children act out each line, for example at "Sleepy cats," children curl up like a cat and pretend to sleep.
3. Ask the children to think of more movements that cats make. Allow them to demonstrate their movements, and let their classmates make those moves.
4. Afterwards, reread the poem and talk to the children about rhyming words.
5. Pass out a sentence strip to each of eight children. Have each child try to find the child who has the rhyming word that goes with theirs (ex: ruggy - huggy). Repeat until each child has had a turn.More to doArt: Let each child pick one line of the poem to illustrate. Adults can write the line for younger children while older children can copy the words themselves.Special day: Invite parents to bring pet cats for visits to the classroom.
