Materials
Magic Sand or Squand Sand (or very fine sand and silicone spray)
aquarium
squeeze bottles
water
plastic tableware
Instructions
1. Cut out a cardboard circle slightly larger
than the end of a toilet paper tube.
2. Make a hole in the center of the circle and
thread the yarn or rope through. Knot or
tie the yarn or rope to
secure it. Also glue
the knot to
strengthen the hole
and further secure the
rope. Let dry.
3. Thread empty toilet paper
tubes onto the rope, making
sure none of the tubes is
narrow enough to slip
into the one next
to it. Keep adding
tubes to make a
long, flexible hose.
4. Secure another cardboard circle at the
other end of the tube to close it.
5. Cut a circle into one side of a
plastic pail so that the hose
end will fit into it. This will
be the hydrant.
6. Cut out pictures of
flames from magazines
or color some and cut
them out. Laminate for
durability.
7. Ask the children to place the
flames on objects in the room.
8. Encourage children to work together as a fire fighting team to insert the
hose into the hydrant, turn on the water, and carry the hose, support it, aim,
and put out the fires. If possible, provide hats and gloves to add realism.
Stress the importance of teamwork in fire fighting.
