Learn Every Day About Numbers

Materials

10 toy cars or trucks

black paper

Instructions

* Cut large numbers from 1 to 10 from the black paper.
* Use chalk to draw a dotted line down the center of each number so that it
looks like a road.
* Draw a green circle at the beginning of each number and a red circle at the
end of each number.
What to Do
1. Invite the children to manipulate a car as they learn more about writing
numbers.
2. Have the children place their car at the "green light" starting point on each
number.
3. Invite the children to drive their car along the road until they come to the "red
light." Once the children stop at the end of the number, have them take their
car and move on to a different number.
4. Encourage the children to drive a car along all 10 numbers.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can each child identify the numbers and stop and go as directed by the red
and green lights?
* Draw a grid of 10 spaces on a sheet of construction paper. Write a number in
each space and each of the corresponding numbers on one car. Can the
children drive their cars into the "garage" with the matching number?
