Instructions

1. Explain to the children that they are going to divide up the big group of cars into smaller groups. Note: If you do not have a lot of toy cars, cut out a variety of car shapes in different colors.

2. Ask for ideas about making smaller groups of cars. If no one comes up with a way, suggest sorting the cars by color.

3. Choose a child to pick up a car of any color. Ask the other children to find colors that match (have them do this one child at a time).

4. Continue until all the cars of that color have been chosen.

5. Use a marker to make a label for the color of that set of cars.

6. Continue with a different color until all the cars have been sorted by color.

7. Ask for another sorting idea. Give the children hints if they need some help. Suggest they try convertibles and hardtops, those with doors that open and those that don't, trucks and cars, those made of metal and those made of plastic, and so on.
