Materials
images of flies and ladybugs
red and black socks or mittens of varying size (use other colors for
other insects, if desired)
plastic margarine or whipped topping containers, 16 oz. or larger
basket or box
Instructions
Make two sets of cards. Make one set shaped like bees; cut out a total of 30.
Make the second set shaped like beehives; cut out a total of 10. On the
beehive set, copy a number from 1 to 5 on five of the beehives, and write
number words "one" through "five" on the other five.
What to Do
1. Talk with the children about bees. Ask the children to describe what they have
seen bees doing.
2. Explain to the children that bees are out gathering pollen from flowers and
bringing it back to their hives to make honey.
3. Show the children the bee and beehive cutouts, and explain that for this
game, certain beehives need a specific number of bees to bring them nectar.
4. Challenge the children to match the correct number of bee cutouts to each
hive.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Use a pocket chart, if available. Laminate both sets of cards for durability.
* For children who have difficulty counting, consider tracing the correct
number of bee cutouts on the beehives so the children can match the correct
number of bees to the hive.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children correctly match the sets to the numeral words?
* Can the children count aloud the number of bees that belong in each hive?
