Materials
new book and paper large enough to wrap around the cover of a book
chalkboard and chalk
Instructions
1. When you have a few extra moments outdoors, try this game.
2. Draw a chalk shape on the pavement, such a 3' square.
3. Ask the children to guess how many players could fit inside the shape
without touching the lines. Write their guesses outside the shape.
4. Call the children by name to stand inside. Stop when the shape is "full."
Count the children inside the shape and compare this number with their
guesses.
5. Change the shape and size of the chalk drawings to continue the game as
long as the children are interested.
6. On rainy days, you can play this game inside by using masking tape to create
shapes on the floor.
More to do Math: Use paper, crayons, and counters (poker or bingo disks, teddy bears, or
other small objects) to create a tabletop version of this game. "How many teddy
bears do you think will fit inside this circle?"
