green buttons
white construction paper
green marker
Instructions
l Roll a long piece of poster paper onto a table (or several tables set up end to
end).
l Gather crayons, pastels, pencil crayons, and markers in many shades of blue.
What to Do
1. Ask the children to find all the blue toys and objects in the classroom and bring
them to the table.
2. Help the children find a light blue and a dark blue toy or object. Put the
lightest toy at one end of the table and the darkest at the other end.
3. Now help them arrange the other toys or objects between the lightest and
darkest ends of the blue scale. You now have a blue scale on the table.
4. Next, help the children match the blue crayons, pastels, pencils, and markers
to the blue objects on the table. These art media should make a similar graded
blue scale.
5. The children can then use the shades of blue to color on the white paper, with
lightest blue at one end of the paper and darkest blue at the other end.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l Allow children to color their own blue scales on a smaller paper.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Engage the children in a discussion about the variety of hues that all fall into
the category of "blue." Review how they created a blue scale to visualize their
understanding.
