Materials

Butterfly shapes cut from dark paper Tape

Butterfly net, or stretch a pair of nylons over a bent coat hanger frame and tape the end of the hanger

Instructions

1. Tape butterflies in a bright sunny window. The sun should project the shapes on the floor.

2. Have the children "capture" (cover) the shadow butterflies with the net. Leave the net in place on top of the butterflies.

3. Check on the butterflies later. As the sun moves, the children will be amazed to see the butterflies escaping from the net. Ask the children to explain how this happened. Explain how the earth rotates and changes position.More to doArt: Trace black paper silhouettes of the children.Dramatic play: Have a hand shadow or shadow puppet show.Language: Have the children dictate or write their ideas about where the sun goes at night.
