Instructions

1. Read a book about composting with the children (see listed for suggestions).
2. Engage the children in a discussion about composting.
3. Try to recreate a compost pile with blocks and a barrel (the compost).
4. Assign colored blocks for what would go in a compost heap, such as white
for egg shells, blue for potato peels, orange for fall leaves, and green for grass
clippings.
5. Talk about how the
compost heap
should be turned
while the children
turn over blocks
inside the barrel.
6. Scoop blocks inside
the barrel out onto
a pretend garden
plot. Talk about how
the compost will
make the vegetables
grow big and healthy.
