blindfolds (optional)

Instructions

* Bury different numbers in the sandbox.
What to Do
1. Work with one child, or a few children, at a
time. Ask each child to close her eyes (or use
a blindfold is the child is willing). Tell the
child that she is going to be digging for
treasure.
2. Tell each child to dig in the sand until
she finds a number, then feel it all
over and tell you what number it is.
Note: To add a bit of fun, bury
several play coins in the sand for the
children to dig up and count.
Poem
Sand Pies by Anne Adeney
Hot sand pies to sell,
Hot sand pies to sell,
Pat them down tightly,
And turn them out well.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
* Can the children identify numbers by touch?
* Can the children identify differences in numbers by touch?
