1. Draw sets of mittens on tagboard.
2. Cut out rhyming pictures (cat and bat, frog and dog) and glue them to
the left and right hand of each pair of mittens (or draw rhyming
pictures on the mittens).
3. Using a paper cutter, cut the mitten cards to the desired size.
4. If desired, make a header card to go in the top row of the pocket chart.
Draw a picture of a snowman wearing mittens, the title of the activity,
and instructions to: "Pair the mittens with matching rhyming words."
5. If desired, make a file jacket from 12" x 18" construction paper to hold
the activity.
6. Laminate the header card, mitten cards, and file jacket for durability,
and cut out.
7. Give each child a right mitten.
8. Hold up a left mitten and ask the children to identify the picture on it.
9. Put it in a pocket chart, leaving room for its mate to be placed next to it.
10. Ask the children to look at their mittens and if they have a picture of a
rhyming word, come forward and place it next to its mate on the
pocket chart.
11. Continue in this manner with each set of mittens.
12. When you have run out of mittens, display the completed pocket chart
in a center for children to revisit during free time.
