nature magazines such as Big Backyard
glue stick
6 or more boxes with lids, such as shoeboxes or checkbook boxes
Instructions
1. Talk with the children about butterflies, and how they have symmetrical wings.
Define "symmetry" for the children.
2. Explain that the children will be making and enjoying symmetrical
snacks.
3. Cut finger sandwiches in triangle quarters.
4. Give each child two quarters of the sandwich for the wings, place a slice
of pickle in the middle for the body and a pretzel stick broken
into halves for antennas.
5. Consider using olives or raisins for spots.
6. Enjoy the snack!
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
* Make clothespin butterflies with the children: Fold small squares of tissue
paper in half, put drops of food coloring in an eye-dropper. Drop colors on
the tissue paper. Clip a clothespin in the middle. Add pipe cleaners for
antennas. Draw a face. Each child has a butterfly with symmetrical wings.
