Materials
insect photos and books
whiteboard and dry erase marker
clay or playdough
Instructions
* Cut at least 30 4" paper ovals from the construction paper.
* Use the marker to draw a face and a number or letter on one side of each
paper circle.
* Lay the paper "bugs" face down randomly about the large group area.
What to Do
1. Talk with the children about the way bugs walk. Talk about the word "crawl"
and ask if they can show you what it means. Then talk about how some bugs
can fly also, and ask the children to show you how bugs might fly.
2. Tell the children that when you say, "Ready, set, go buggy!" they should crawl
around the floor like a bug, and turn over each paper bug they come upon.
3. Ask them to name the letter or number on the bottom side of each bug they
see and then turn it back over.
4. Allow several minutes for the children to identify shapes as they crawl around.
5. Call, "Fly away home," directing the children to "fly" to their starting place.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Invite one child to lay out a string of 10 paper "bugs." Listen and observe as
the child turns over each paper bug and identifies each letter or number.
* Gather all 30 of the paper bugs together. Place them in a butterfly net. As you
hold the net, have the children come forward one by one to remove a bug
from the net, show the class, and then name the letter or number. Continue
until all the bugs have been removed from the net and each letter or number
has been identified.
