What to do

1. Send a note home asking parents to do the following:

  • Before your child leaves for school, turn off the radio and/or television.
  • Be very quiet and still and listen to a sound (such as a bird singing, a baby crying, a dog barking, or a refrigerator humming).
  • On a piece of paper, write the sound your child heard and have her bring it to class.

2. With the children, discuss the sounds during Circle Time. Were the sounds loud? Were they scary? Who or what makes sounds like that?

More to do

Bring a tape recorder on a field trip or picnic to record sounds.

Instructions

1. This activity reinforces the children's color matching and shape recognition
while using their small and large muscles. The activity also lets children
experience static electricity.
2. Inflate large round balloons in a variety of colors.
3. Cut out tissue paper shapes to match the colors of the balloons. (Eight of each
color is a good number.) Scatter the tissue shapes around the room.
4. Ask a child to pick a balloon color. Discuss the chosen color.
5. Encourage the child to rub the balloon against her body to make static
electricity.
6. The child then picks up the tissue paper shape that matches the balloon color.
7. Talk about the names of the colors as children retrieve the tissue paper
balloon shapes.
