Instructions

1. Use pictures of several items from the classroom to create a pattern/sequence
card.
2. Choose toys, thematic items, colored items, poker chips, tangrams, circular
shaped dry cereal, or counting bears and create a color or pattern for the
children to follow.
3. Use actual pictures from catalogs or draw pictures on a piece of poster board.
Glue them to the poster board.
4. Laminate or cover the poster board with clear contact paper for durability.
5. Encourage the child to follow and complete the pattern.
6. For a more challenging activity, complete a line and then partially complete
the next one. Make the sequence of items as complicated or simple as
necessary.
7. Leave out paper and markers for the children to make their own pattern
charts to share with the other children.
More to do
Go on a scavenger hunt following a sequence. Create a surprise for the children
to find after they have found certain objects or followed a series of events. If the
children are finding certain objects, give the clues in a pattern. For example, ask
the children to find an empty ice cream carton, an empty bowl, a spoon, another
empty carton, a bowl, a spoon, and then a full carton of ice cream in the freezer.
Read the clues or draw them on a map for the children to follow. The object
could be to find items related to the surprise. Make this as repetitive as necessary
until the children are able to predict what will come next.
