Instructions

1. During circle time, encourage the children to look carefully at their hands,
especially at the fingerprints on each finger. Explain that each child's
fingerprints are different from everyone else's fingerprints.
2. Talk about other ways each child is special.
3. Read This Thumbprint to the children.
4. Give the children old catalogs and encourage them to cut out pictures of
things they like, such as hamburgers, books, bicycles, and so on.
5. Encourage the children to paste their pictures onto a piece of paper. Explain
that they are making a picture story of one special person themselves!
6. When they are finished, encourage the children to share their pictures with
the rest of the children.
More to do
Art: Pour tempera paint into saucers. Put a folded paper towel into each saucer
and soak it with paint. Help the children make thumbprints by pressing their
thumbs onto the paper towels soaked in paint and then onto a piece of manila
paper with their own thumbprint designs. If desired, write the child's name, and
then encourage her to make thumbprints all over it.
Movement: Make "Me Shadows." Hang a white sheet in a doorway and shine a
light behind it. Divide the group into two teams. Ask one person to stand behind
the screen and move around, but not talk. The other team guesses who is behind
the screen.
