Instructions

* Display the four recycling bins at one end of the room.
* Display a set of five or more items in a row ahead of each bin. Leave five or
more feet of space between each item.
What to Do
1. Divide the class into four teams.
2. Assign each child a partner within the team.
3. Have partners line up behind their bin.
4. One child will push the bin while the other child collects recyclables along
the way.
5. On the command of "ready, set, recycle!" the four pairs of children push their
bins down the length of the room, collecting and naming the recyclables as
they place them in their bin.
6. The team players then touch the wall on the opposite side of the room and
push the bin back to their team.
7. After the relay, remove the items and display them in rows again, ready for the
next group of children. As you remove and display items, invite the children to
identify each type of recyclable and chant the word aloud: "aluminum,"
"cardboard," "plastic," and so on.
Assessment
Consider the following:
* Can the children identify the items set out and say whether they are
recyclable?
* Display an assortment of recyclables on a table. Invite each child to come
forward and select an item. Have the child tell how he could reuse the item
before recycling it.
