Instructions

l Create an open area for children to bend, stretch, and lie down.
l Set up one poster for each shape in a particular part of the area.
What to Do
1. Read a favorite shape book with the children. After reading the book, discuss
with the children the attributes of various shapes.
2. Separate the children into groups. Explain that each group will make shapes
together with their bodies when they lie on the floor.
3. Tell each group which shape they are to create, and then send them to
different areas of the room.
4. Allow the children time to discuss how the will create that shape with all their
bodies. For example, how will the group of four friends create a square?
Where will they lie down?
5. If the children need help figuring out how to make their shapes, refer them to
the posters that have the shapes on them.
6. After the children have had time to practice making their shapes, give each
group the opportunity to present and explain their shape to the rest of the
children. Discuss the shapes as a class.
Teacher - to - Teacher Tip
l When a group needs a challenge, have them create a shape that is not one of
the basic four shapes. For example, challenge the group to make a hexagon or
diamond.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children identify the number of sides for their shapes?
l How long does it take a group of children to create the shape together?
