blocks of various shapes and colors

baskets or bins in the same colors as the blocks

construction paper

markers

scissors

Instructions

1. With the children, look for simple AB patterns in the photos and wrapping
paper.
2. Look for patterns at school and in the classroom. Patterns can be found
everywhere: brick-space-brick-space, glass-trim-glass-trim, coat space-wood
divider-coat space-wood divider, and so on.
3. Encourage the children to make patterns using blocks, other children (tallshort,
girl-boy), letters, numbers, anything and everything!
4. Expand the pattern to AABAAB and other fun, child-led patterns.
5. Have the children create patterns using pictures from catalogs and
magazines or draw a pattern using markers on strips of paper.
