* National Bird Day is January 5th.
1. Teach the children Edward Lear's famous nonsense poem:
There was an old man with a beard,
Who said, "It is just as I feared!
Two owls and a hen, four larks and a wren,
Have all made their nests in my beard!
2. Cut heavy white paper or cards
into a beard shape, one for
each child.
3. Cut out one tiny, four
small, two medium,
and one large ovals
for each child,
making sure they
will all fit onto the
beard shape.
4. Show the children
pictures of a wren,
lark, owl, and hen.
5. Encourage them to draw
the pictures on the
appropriate oval (a wren on
the tiny oval, four larks on the
small ovals, two owls on the medium ovals, and a hen on the large oval).
6. Help the children glue the birds onto their beards. Let them add cotton
wool or yarn for hair, if desired.
7. Fasten each child's beard securely to a paper plate.
8. Encourage the children to draw an old man's face onto the plate.
