Materials

clean, empty bleach and soda bottles

mesh produce bags

pinecones

peanut butter

large bag of wild birdseed

1 pound of softened lard

2 cups of oatmeal

Instructions

1. Cut out four large squares from the sides of each bleach bottle, so they
look like small gazebos. Leave the base and the top as they are. Attach a
string around the top of each bottle for hanging.
2. Randomly cut "n" shapes around each soda bottle. Fold the "n" shapes
down to form perches. Attach a string to the top of each bottle for
hanging.
3. Fill the soda and bleach bottles with birdseed.
4. Tie strings to the tops of the pinecones. Spread peanut butter on the
pinecones and roll each pinecone in wild birdseed.
Note: If any of the children have peanut allergies, skip this step.
5. Make Bird Pudding. Mix 1 pound of softened lard, 2 cups of oatmeal, and
4 cups of wild birdseed. Add a little hot water until the pudding is a
doughy consistency.
6. Fill the mesh bags with Bird Pudding.
7. Take all the bird feeders outside and hang in the trees for a bird banquet.
Make observations. What kind of bird visits most frequently? Which
feeder do the birds prefer?
