Big Fat Hen by Keith Bakerhole punch

Instructions

1. Using the cardstock or construction paper, make 15 signs.

2. Write or trace and color the numerals 1 to 10 on each of 10 signs. On the other five, draw or glue pictures of a shoe, a door, sticks in a pile, sticks in a row, and a big fat hen.

3. Punch two holes at the top and string the yarn through so that the signs can be worn around the children's necks.

4. Gather the children in a circle and give each child a sign. If there are more than 15 children in your class, make extra signs so that everyone will hold one.

5. Tell them that you are going to read a story about numbers and chickens.

6. As you read Big Fat Hen, have the children listen for the number or object that they are wearing and stand up as you read about it.

7. See if the children can put themselves in order according to the popular rhyme. Chant it aloud and have them run to their places as you call it out.
