Materials

  • pictures of objects depicting beginning sounds
  • markers
  • card stock or poster board
  • scissors
  • glue
  • two brad paper fasteners

What to do

1. Make this beginning sounds wheel game to keep children busy during transition and waiting times.

2. Cut a piece of card stock or poster board into an 8  1/2 " x 5" rectangle. Cut out a 1" x 1" square from the middle of each 5" side to make "windows" (see illustration on the next page).

Instructions

1. Brainstorm questions that go with the theme for each week. They can be yesor-
no questions or multiple-choice questions. Write the question on a
sentence strip and put it at the top of a pocket chart.
2. Write the possible answers to the questions on smaller pieces of sentence
strips and add them under the question.
3. As a transition to leaving group or circle time, read the question and possible
answers. One by one, as the children leave group or circle time, go up and
put their name card under the answer they choose.
4. After everyone has a turn or later in the day, take a minute to count the
responses. Which answer had the most names? Which ones had the least?
This is a great math and graphing activity to use regularly in your classroom.
More to do Literacy: It is helpful to add picture clues next to the answers. This helps with
pre-reading skills. If your answers are "yes" or "no," you could add a smile face
next to yes and a sad face next to no. Keep the pictures simple. Teachers can
add their names to the questions of the week too.
