Instructions

1. Most teachers change the books available to the children with each newtheme. However, sometimes the children don't even notice there are newbooks available. Here is a game I invented to help the children becomeaware of the new books.2. The first day of a new theme, instead of putting all the books in the center, write each child's name on a nametag and put one on each book. Then hidethe books in various places in the room.3. When the children arrive, their first "job" is to look around the room and finda book with their name on it. (Remind them not to give away where theother books are hidden.)4. Tell them that when they find their book, they should take it to the bookcorner and "read" it. Encourage the children to take at least 3-5 minutes tolook through the book, then place it on the shelf or wherever books are keptin the book center (keep the name tag on for now).5. Later, at circle time, have a "show and tell" with the books. Each child standsup and shows his book to the group. Ask the children to say one thing aboutsomething they saw in the book. For example, "This book has lions in it" or"The girl jumps in the water."6. Throughout the rest of the theme, whenever you read a book to the group, ask the child whose name is on it to stand and hold the book while you readit or help you turn the pages. You can also use this game when you introduce new materials in other centers, such as manipulative or art supplies. If the child's name is on the material, hegets to be the first to try it and demonstrate it to the group. Ask the child to talkabout the right and the wrong way to use that material.More Books: Ask the children to bring in books from home to hide for theirfriends to find and then read.
