Instructions

1. This silly transition activity helps children learn they have a first and last
name. Knowing this is extremely important. Print children's names on a
seasonal shape and tape it on the class tree. This activity can be done with
the children's names on word cards in a pocket chart too. On the other side,
print the name again with photo of child so they can practice any time or
learn the names of the children.
Note: Children can learn to say both first and last names, but when
recognizing it in print, start with only the first name.
2. Sit by the tree or pocket chart. As you say a child's first name in the first line
of the rhyme below, invite the child to try to remember his last name when
you say the second line. After you say the entire rhyme, invite the child to
find and point to his name on the shape on the tree or chart and move onto
the next activity.
____________ is my first name,
____________ is my last.
I can find my name
Very, very fast.
More to do Writing: invite the child to trace over his name with wipe-off crayon on a
laminated word card in the Writing center. Use the name cards to help children
print their name. Start with only the first name. Use magnetic letters,
playdough, sticker alphabet letters, letter stamps, or felt letters.
