Instructions

1. Cut out four stars from yellow paper, approximately 4" in size. Write a
different letter on each star (preferably letters the children are familiar with
or are learning).
2. Using old magazines, cut out three pictures that correspond to the
beginning sound of each of the four chosen letters for a total of 12 pictures
(for example, cut out a kangaroo, kite, and key to represent "k"). Glue each
picture to a piece of 4" x 4" tagboard.
3. Laminate the four stars and the 12 picture cards for durability, and cut out.
4. Hang a pocket chart at children's eye level.
5. Discuss the names of the letters on each star. Randomly position each of the
stars equal distance apart in the top pocket of the pocket chart.
6. Pass out the picture cards and encourage each child to determine its
beginning sound.
7. Let each child place her picture under the correct star letter.
