Materials

sentence strips

foam or construction paper of various colors

scissors (adult only)

stapler (adult only)

Instructions

l Cut differently colored shapes out of foam or construction paper.
l Staple individual shapes to the centers of the sentence strips. Laminate.
l Wrap the sentence strips in circles, and staple them to make headbands.
l Write the shape names on the shapes to enhance the children's literacy and
pre-reading skills.
What to Do
1. Show the children the headbands, and engage them in a discussion about the
shapes on each headband.
2. Give each child a headband to put on, and ask the children to identify the
shapes they are wearing.
3. Divide the children into groups. Sing the following song with the children,
encouraging them to come to the front of the classroom and stay there when
they hear the name of the shape or color in their headbands.
Circles, Circles by Shelley Hoster
(Tune: "My Bonnie Lies Over the Ocean")
I'm looking for all the circles.
I'm looking for all that I see.
I'm looking for all the circles
To make a group with me.
Circles, circles, come make a group
with me, with me.
Circles, circles, come make a group
with me!
4. Repeat the song, substituting another shape name. Do this until all of the
children are in shape groups at the front of the room.
Assessment
To assess the children's learning, consider the following:
l Can the children name the different colors and shapes on the headbands?
l Can the children classify objects in the classroom by color and shape?
