Instructions
1. In advance, cut out 25 circles, about 3" (7 cm) in diameter, from construction
paper. (You will probably need more as the book worm grows!)
2. Draw a face on one of the circles and tape it to a wall in the classroom.
Explain that each time you or a helper reads a book to one or more children
in the class, the worm will grow another segment (circle) to its "body."
3. Each time you or a helper reads a book to the children, write the title of the
book on a circle and add it to the end of the worm.
4. If desired, color-code the circles to show whether you read a book to the
whole class or to an individual. For example, write the titles of all the books
you read during Circle Time on green circles. Assign other colors to each
child and add a circle of that color when you or a helper reads a book to him
during Center Time.
5. Continue to watch the bookworm grow over a period of several weeks. It will
begin to creep all around the room! The children will be amazed to see how
many books they have read.
More to do
Home Connection: Encourage parents to start their own Book Worm at home
with their child. If desired, send home some pre-cut circles to motivate them to
read to their children.
Math: Count the circles on the Book Worm each day. For example, how many
more circles are there than yesterday? How many more circles do we need to
reach 20? Are there more blue circles or more circles of other colors? (Be careful
not to compare one child to another.)
