Butcher paper, 6' (2 m) long
Paint in fall leaf colors PaintbrushesInstructions
What to do
1. In the center of the butcher paper, draw the outline of a tree with bare branches.
2. Have the children paint the tree trunk and branches.
3. When they are finished, invite the children to brush paint on the palms of their hands, then
press their palms to the paper, making a leaf print in the shape of their hands.
4. Encourage the children to use several different colors, positioning the prints along the branches
and falling from the tree.
More to do
Math: Count fresh leaves and sort them by color, then use paint and handprints to create a colorful
chart or graph.
More art: Make a hand-print border for the bulletin board. Paint a tree on a smaller sheet of
paper and add fingerprint leaves, then frame your leaf print in construction paper and attach
small leaves or miniature pinecones to the frame with glue. Create a family tree with photos or
drawings of family.
